Never More
Never More tells the story of a modern Apocalypse: the politics of 2020 smashing into the wall of the Covid pandemic, an entangled state of phenomena. The imagery and color choices are inspired by the Apocalypse Tapestry in Angé, France, The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, E.A. Poe’s poem Never More, The Hours of Catherine of Cleves, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse painting by Viktor Vasnetsov, and more. At the bottom of the work is Uncle Sam going to hell in a band basket. At the top is a symbol of chaos resembling the Corona Virus viewed under a microscope with a hammer and sickle embedded within. This tapestry is chock full of symbolism that can be read in many ways. Though it looks dark and we are fearful there is hope. Around the Unicorn’s neck is a symbol for unity. So small a symbol with the power to weld the world. Fréo Ellenlic: Brave and Valiant Woman
In the climate of Trump America, strong women became the enemy, truth a moving target and commitment negotiable.
In Fréo Ellenlic, Anglo Saxon for a daringly bold and valiant woman, the archer is about to loose her arrow. She is focused, resolute and allied with her mount. When the arrow strikes the target the score is irrefutable and true. War Cry
This work was a study in tonal values. It also expresses the rage around the idea of war. 16.5 in x 13 inches, wool & cotton, 2004
Revolution
'Revolution" was inspired by a c.1780, French, silk, walking dress, a new style derived from work clothes and town wear of ordinary people. In this new style, the skirt, draped back gave the wearer more freedom of movement. The folds and bright red color caught my eye."Revolution' speaks to the new freedom of the dress but also to the upcoming French Revolution and most importantly to the clothing evolution that would begin in earnest around 1850 with talk of how restrictive clothing distorted women's bodies and compromised their health. This was the start of the women's movement. Women tried to take back control of their bodies through clothing, later suffrage and on to today's issues. 60 x 27.5 inches, cotton & silk, 2012 Artist's Collection
Temptation
“Temptation” explores the complexity of sexual identity and gender. It was inspired by drag performances. I was permitted to photograph performers while doing hair and makeup. One performer, Chocoláte, granted me the privilege of sharing an intimate moment, as she donned her wig. The photos I took of her inspired this work. Issues of individuality and concepts such as innocence, enlightenment and liberation were on my mind while working on this tapestry.
